Alberto Gironella, Queen Mariana

La Reina Mariana

Alberto Gironella, Queen Mariana, 1961

Alberto Gironella's Queen Mariana (1961) exemplified what Valerie Fraser calls his ‘mestizo’ art: the rich amalgamation of European and Indigenous Mexican cultures  By appropriating the tradition of Velázquez into Mexican artistic tradition, Gironella both acknowledges and resists the cultural influence of Europe on the formation of Mexican national identity.
