National Identity

This section of the exhibition focuses on the construction and imagining of national identity in Pop Art in the Americas.  A selection of Chicano, Cuban, Argentinean, Colombian, and Brazilian works demonstrate the struggle that artists faced to identify their own national identity within a historical context of colonization and revolution.  While some artists concentrate on building a new national identity during a period of modernization, other artists deconstruct their existing national identity in order to challenge the existing imperialist or dictator powers that defined this identity.  Throughout a variety of styles and mediums, these  artists challenge the audience to consider their own perceptions of identity and nation.
