A Very Topical Illustration

Beatriz González, Illustrated Current Events, 1974.

This silk screen work uses irony and humor to address the Colombian population’s consumption of popular press and its dependance on the mass media. By focusing specifically on Colombia’s fascination with British royalty, González critiques the population’s focus on social events that revolve around foreign celebrities and creates a laughable parody of an insignificant event that was blown out of proportion by the press. This work demonstrates how consumption of mass media functions to create another form of ignorance in Latin America by focusing on unimportant subjects, while silencing more pressing issues.
